We celebrate the lives of adults who passed away
May they rest in peace
But may their legacy live longer

The Haunted House
I know a haunted house that is in the garden of the oak tree A thin woman lives there Who has an exquisite hat This elegant lady Whom they call “La Catrina” Gifted with grace and nobility Reminds me of my godmother
She shows off her jewels and riches She is slender and bony She believes she is beautiful But she is a skeleton without a doubt!
When “La Catrina” lies Like...

The Dia de los Muertos skull-girl make-up is cultural appropriation.
Stop doing that. It’s not cool. Stop. You probably don’t know anything about the holiday outside of how it looks cool.
I was so wondering about this the other…

Estoy Embriagado
Estoy embriagado, lloro, me aflijo, Pienso, digo, En mi interior lo encuentro: Si yo nunca muriera, Si nunca desapareciera. Allá donde no hay muerte, Allá donde ella es conquista, Que allá vaya yo… Si yo nunca muriera, Si yo nunca desapareciera.
I am drunk, I cry, I grieve, I think, I say, I find it in my interior: If I never died, If I never disappeared. Over there where there is no...

Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” becomes U.K.’s bestselling album of 21st century
“Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ has become the U.K.’s biggest-selling album of the 21st century. The Official Charts Company announced Wednesday (Aug 24) that a surge in sales of Winehouse’s sophomore album since her death July 23 had helped it to overtake James Blunt’s...

MEXICAN CHOCOLATE
Mexican chocolate is made from dark, bitter chocolate mixed with sugar, cinnamon, and sometimes nuts. The end result is a “grainy” less smooth product. Chocolate is frequently purchased in “disks” although it is also available in bars and syrups.

Halloween Offerings
By Jerry Griswold
Now celebrated in many parts of the world, Halloween has come to mean different things to different people. For some adults, the holiday has acquired a Mardi-Gras flavor and offers opportunities to pose at parties and bars as preening pimps and naughty nurses. Spandex, it seems, has liberated many a black cat and outed a number of otherwise closeted...

The Day of The Dead Cheat Sheet
DISCLAIMER:
Everything I mention here is based on what I have learned from studying altars and what people from various regions put on them, years of leisurely reading about Mexican history/tradition, taking college level courses in Mesoamerican cultures, googling stuff, reading up on esoteric/metaphysical symbolism, etcetera. I do not consider myself an expert on the Day of the Dead in any way,...

Part 3: The History of the Day of the Dead.
A NEW VISION: THE MURALIST MOVEMENT
After Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship ended in Mexico, an artistic revolution began that was based on the power of communication, freedom, and the appropriation of Mexican culture which had been taken by foreigners for centuries. People were finally able to speak about their unhappiness with corruption and loss of identity. This is pretty intense. How do you...

Part 2: The History of The Day of The Dead.
2.1 THE ARRIVAL OF CATHOLICISM IN MEXICO (Hernán Cortes arrived in Mexico in 1519 and all hell broke loose) The story of the Conquest of Mexico is very sad. And long. I recommend you read the whole story in some encyclopedia if you have plenty of extra time. If you’re not really in the mood to get depressed, I’ll give you a much shorter, colloquial version: Hernán Cortez arrives in...
